Building A Server

Recommended Posts

My dad is giving me a Dell computer from his work on Saturday, and i figure i will end up making it into a home server for my place. I don't know what is inside of it right now, but i want to making server. I figure i will put three 500GB hard-drives in on a raid configuration, and get a new wireless N router to hook it into. so does anyone have any suggestions about configuring it, or what OS i should use on the computer? thanks

I'd get Ubuntu Server...Ubuntu's easy to configure with Wireless...but I'd wait for the next LTS version (long-term support) which is out in April.

Windows 2000 Server (Especially if it's just a file server), hard to come by but I'm sure us Techs in the house can manage. Other than Win2KServer I'd use Ubuntu.

Unless you're doing this as a hobby, why the hell would you bother with a Linux server on a small home network when the client systems are all Windows? Boggles the mind.

More of an experience thing I think, but I kinda agree.
