I've just finished the book... I liked it, but damned if I could tell you why it was so popular. I think that the movie could definitely be better than the book, which alone is almost effortlessly cinematic.
You just have to understand how hard the movie is before you watch it, and then not watch it until you are in the mood you need to be in to deal with the film.
I see the point of the camera work. I think that it was a stylized thing that they were tying to do, but wouldn't find out until the editing process that it didn't really work, but by then it was too late to re-shoot any of it.
I think it's fair... you can tell that the filmmakers have a leaning, just making this film, but they don't push it, they have a lot of respect for their audience.
Yeah... I just got back from it. It was very underwhelming, due entirely to the script, though... the cast and direction were all very good, but the script just couldn't back them up.
