To anyone on this forum (or perhaps even Mr. Good himself), I have a bit of a request. I have just purchased my first home. As most of you probably know first hand, this process has become quite the endeavor, and over the course of the past few weeks I have poured some hard-earned blood, sweat and tears into getting this place ready to move my family in. I tell you all this because it sets up my request. I want to hang a canvas of the 'Lights' album cover above the fire place. It is my all-time favorite record, and as an artist and musician myself, Lights has been an amazing source of inspiration over the years. I have looked into it and it seems that I can get this printed on canvas relatively cheaply, but the problem is I lack a hi-res source of the artwork. Does anyone have a hi-res copy of the album cover? Does anyone have a hi-res copy of the album cover minus the words? Please note that I have no intentions of doing anything with this other than staring at it everytime I walk into my living room for the foreseeable future. It will never be sold. But, if this is in any way not-kosher (for any reason) please let me know...while my intentions here are good I don't want to jam anyone up on account of copyright. And to Matt: If this art is attached to specific artist I would happily pay for the rights to re-print it for my personal use. Thank-you to everyone and anyone who reads this in advance! James

Thomas Wolfe - Of Time and the RIver One of the great unsung Southern writers that is most likely due to the lack of availability of most of his work combined with his absence from High School reading lists. Admittedly an acquired taste, the man is to words what Mozart was to notes...if some is good, more is best!

Yeah, I hear you there. And it really is an amazing album. Like I said, it was really a matter of splitting hairs. For what it's worth, my favorite album is by far Lights and I think that there isn't a second wasted on that record. I can't even say that about Avalanche...(always skip 21st century living).

While We Were Hunting Rabbits...(favorite song of all time by ANYONE)
-
As difficult as these questions often are when discussing an artist that you love, I usually use the good ol' "do I skip it more often than not" as an immediate qualifier. And so, with that being said, the 'interlude' type songs like "I'm Not Safer Than A Bank", "21st Century Living" and "Girl Wedged Under The Front of s Firebird" are ones that immediately come to mind.

I am still listening to Chaotic Neutral on a fairly regular basis so I was pleasantly surprised to see Mr. Good is so close to releasing another album. Love the single, but to echo what others have said, the Instagram clip is simply insane...can't wait!

The Tea Party
Williammunny11 replied to MS_DOS's topic in Music In General: David Bowie Appreciation Station
Hey everyone, the podcast that I co-host did an episode on The Tea Party this week...we discussed their past, ran down their catalogue and gave our thoughts on the band’s most recent album, the brilliant The Ocean At The End. It goes without saying that I am a huge fan of this grossly under-appreciated band and I figured there are a bunch fans here as well so I wanted to share this with everyone here. Cheers, https://soundcloud.com/geek-usa/episode21theteaparty -
Favorite tracks on Chaotic Neutral?
Williammunny11 replied to Moonlight_Graham's topic in Matthew Good
A fantastic album that I find myself continuing to go back to despite my initial misgivings about the whole thing...the track that really gets me though is "Los Alamos"...it's way up there for me...the kind of song that perfectly sums up an otherwise indescribable collection of emotions and memories for me. -
Hey everyone......my review of Chaotic Neutral for Soundblab.com: http://soundblab.com/reviews/albums/8213-matthew-good-chaotic-neutral Chaotic Neutral Matthew Good Label: Release date: 2015-09-25 Few artists are ever truly allotted a ‘second chance’ by the ever-growing fickle record buying public. Striking out on your own (or better yet, ‘going solo’) is usually analogous to career suicide. But after enjoying platinum success and an incredible run in the late 90’s/early 00’s with the alt-rock band that shared his name (Matthew Good Band), Matthew Good has somehow managed to do just that, fostering a solo-career that has all but eclipsed his former band’s glory. And now, almost 20 years into his solo career, he has succeeded in creating an artistic identity that stands completely alone, unencumbered by the shadow of his former ‘rock-star’ glory. And with the release of his seventh solo album, Chaotic Neutral, Good firmly and succinctly re-establishes what longtime fans have known forever: Matthew Good is writing the best music of his career. Chaotic Neutral, as the vague ‘D&D’ reference would suggest, is an album of extremes, encapsulating the best moments of Good’s previous two releases, seamlessly combining the lush orchestration of Lights Of Endangered Species with the more immediate swagger of Arrows of Desire. And while the strength of both of those albums lied in the focused, albeit somewhat one-dimensional approach of the material, Chaotic Neutral thrives squarely somewhere in the balance of the two. The album begins with an immediately familiar ring of “All You Sons and Daughters”, a song that could have easily been a late 90’s hit for his former band. “Moment” and “Kid Down The Well” continue the albums momentum with a more ‘rocked-out’ treatment for songs that easily could have stood on their own as acoustic numbers. “No Liars” flat out swings while “Harridan” serves as the album’s defacto centerpiece, a sprawling epic that serves as the albums most sincere nod to the grand, orchestrated vibe of Lights. Where the first half starts with a bang, the second half of the album tends to burn at a simmer, with songs like “Tiger By The Tail” and “Cold Water” featuring sparser arrangements that only serve to highlight what is undoubtedly some of Good’s best lyrical content ever. It’s here where the nuanced production serves the songs best (especially the quieter ones) revealing initially over-looked subtleties with repeated listens. I was originally skeptical when I saw the Kate Bush song “Cloudbusting” (featuring the criminally underrated Holly McNarland) in the track listing, but the song is simply a triumph, reverently conveying the intent of the original with enough deviation to make it stand on it’s own. The album closes with a hushed whisper in the ballad “Los Alamos”, a song that simply ranks up there among the best vocal performances of Good’s career. Chaotic Neutral feels like the final act of an unintentional trilogy, perfectly tying together the impressively wide range of sonic textures that the previous releases Lights and Arrows outlined. With a back catalogue as bulletproof as Good’s it makes it that much more impressive to consider that at this point (when he could simply rest on his artistic laurels, mining his previous hits on the ever-lucrative live nostalgia circuit) Good is still releasing such focused records. And with the release of Chaotic Neutral, he has managed to bookend the kind of three-album run that most artists would die for.

While I support the idea of 'crowdfunding' in general, I will totally echo previous posts by saying that I think it works well for some artists (Failure is a great example), and not so well for others. As an obscure 'DIY' artist myself, I try and support an artist in the way that I would want to be supported. Where physical media exists, I tend to purchase it directly from the band (as opposed to streaming or iTunes). I know for my own releases, this is BY FAR the format that generates me the most income. As far as Chaotic Neutral goes......I can't stop listening to it! Much prefer an album that slowly grows on you, revealing new layers with each repeated listen, as opposed to one that simply is what it is. 'Harridan' is an amazing song!

I've listened to this a dozen or so times now, and after initially being underwhelmed a bit, I am beginning to appreciate the subtleties of the record. In a lot of ways, this feels like a cross to me between Lights and Arrows, and while I love both of those records, they are both beautiful in that they are focused and contain a separate sonic texture. Chaotic Nuetral is a very fitting title, as the songs are kind of all over the place, and the placement of Army of Tigers (with it's heavy handed, slick production) in between two of the albums most quite moments is almost jarring. I like it, a lot. And there are moments (like Los Alamos and Kid Down The Well) that are up there with my favorite of his career. But I think this record will probably wind up sitting in the middle of the pack (along with Vancouver) when it is all said and done. I very much respect Matt's vision and he is one of my favorite artists, but there is definitely a small piece of me that is still pining for a proper release of those demos as they had so much character and depth.

I'm hoping that hearing the songs in the context of the album will help them make a bit more sense because right now I'm a bit underwhelmed with the three singles.

The "making Of" Videos Are Disappointing
Williammunny11 replied to Outtahere's topic in Matthew Good
I saw the 'making of videos' on iTunes and was like "OMG!!!! I can't wait to get off work and watch these!" So twelve hours later, I climb in bed with my laptop and proceed to hit play. Yep, 30 seconds later it was over and I am still scratching my head. But........still so excited for the new record! -
Really Simple Songs Matt Nailed Perfectly
Williammunny11 replied to Outtahere's topic in Matthew Good
"True Love Will Find You In The End" & "Moon Over Marin" This may be one of my favorite covers of all time.....Matt just nails the vibe of both of these songs! -
I dig this tune a lot. Very curious to see where it sits in regards to the rest of the album....
-
Completely respect your opinion....but I feel the lyrics to Garden of Knives are among the best on the album. The imagery and wordplay totally hint to a sensual derision that Matt has rarely touched upon in other songs.

Been lurking on this board for years.........and after suffering through countless "Matt who???" responses on the other message boards I frequent when trying discuss anything pertaining to Mr. Good, I finally decided to bite the proverbial bullet and register here. And so, this seemed as logical a thread as any for my first post. Favorite Matthew Good song of all time you ask? (drumroll please.....) While We Were Hunting Rabbits So, so, so many other obvious choices, but this is my goto 'midnight' drive song even after all these years. They lyrics and vocal speak to me in a way that few other pieces of recorded music ever have.
