  1. LOL im not sure if thats a two part question but if i could have one thing it would be a guarentee on something because nothing is guarenteed. If I could live anywhere probably northern Europe like Sweden. WHat would you do for a klondike bar?
  2. You are very correct in my opinion. I find that depending upon where you are from and what religious institutions are in place that some people will use religion as a status symbol. I guess an example would be the red blooded, god fearin, american type from the bible belt. I mean can you imagine being a muslim in the heart of the bible belt where there are very few people who share your system of belief. One would definatly look down their nose at the other.
  3. Yah i watched it this morning, absolutly hilarious, i died of laughter.
  4. Probably the Enlightenment period or Ancient Greece, both facinating times. If you could go into the future would you?
  5. No. why is it so hot outside?
  6. K'naan is sorta underground hip-hop, he's from Toronto, i think K-OS is kinda helping him blow up, but he's really interesting, lyrically i mean. I dont know if many of you like hip-hop, but personally i only listen to progressive and positive hip-hop like Dead Prez, Tupac, Talib Kweli, etc but anyway he's worth looking into, i think his current single is called Strugglin. Anyway thought id share.
  7. I don't like eggs. Whats funnier then a dead baby? ;)
  8. It doesnt take two to make war ;) it takes one that decides its going to invade the other and the one being invaded defends or sits there and takes it. Yes Bush is a poor representation of Christianity. However, what I was refering too about pillars of the community are those many many catholic priests who were found to be molesting little boys. That is some f-ed up stuff, and in fact, collectivly how many wars have been fought over religion? Lots of them. It is epistemically irresponsible to believe in a religion which causes so much trouble for humanity. IF we were truly religious we'd live the way our collective dieties want us to, but we don't. So really whats the point? Here's also my next question, how can one be a soldier and be a christian? Is that not going directly against everything that this religion teaches? IF you kill a man, whether it be in war or otherwise that is considered a sin, you have murdered somebody this is probably one of the worst of sins. You cannot justify it with you being apart of the military, those are mans laws. Gods laws are suppose to supercede those correct? Therefore, either a lot of people are going to hell, or religion is just excess human baggage that we may be better off without. I dont mean to be attacking anyones point of view, this is not my intent, what is my intent is to get people thinking, and wondering why if we believe in one thing, we do another. WE cannot simply follow along like sheep and allow others to tell us how to live. Especially in terms of law, religion and law needs to be heavily seperated, religion is taking away the rights of women in the U.S., how fair is that? I am not completely condemning religion im just saying we need to be progressive in our mindsets and not regressive in a time when we can actually see some sort of equality.
  9. I have to disagree with you here bud. Its not quite a coincidence that the people who are causing a lot evil are themselves religious. Its that they use the name of their god to do evil, its how they sometimes gain the power to do this evil (i.e. Bush), and defend what they are doing with this religion. If there was no religion, Bush would not be able to defend what he's doing as "gods work" etc which he has thrown around. He would be somewhat accountable ( although this is a hypothetical and if there wasnt religion he'd and many others would simply find another scapegoat). The problem is, for me at least, religion offers authority where there should be none. Prime example, a priest is sometimes " the pillar of the community" i dont really believe this is right. I think that a secular leader in the community doing good for the community should be that pillar. Of course this cannot always be the case because not all towns, citys, etc have much more then a church and a city hall. But Religion, gives these priests authority and power politcally which is compltetly wrong. In a secular government this should not be. Not to mention that a lot of religion keeps and creates these social "norms" for lack of a better term that i also feel is totally wrong. For example, most religions maintain this patriarchial bullshit. Women who want to be priests are barred from doing so legitamatly by the catholic religion. This again is not all churches, but they still reinforce (generally speaking) these nonsensical rules which they determine is right or wrong. I dont believe anyone should create morality for me, i create it for myself, and think all people are capable of doing so. Anyway these are just a few of my peet peeves with religion and thought id chim in. I am really glad to see that this thread has developed some meaningful discussion.
  10. Religion itself is the fount of most evil Muriel Gray argues that it
  11. That is one of the most f-ed up websites i have ever seen.
  12. Exactly, if one study's the law, its drawn in the favor of rich white folks. The system is inherently racist as well, its fundamentally wrong in a lot of ways in terms of "justice". You can't blame the oppressed for doing what they must just to get by, and then ignore or downplay even worse crimes committed by corporate America. This is also true for Canada as well, i mean these corporations have committed homicide through what they produce and many other ways, tax fraud, stealing, etc, what makes there crimes less heinous then a man stealing from a local liquor store or wallet etc? One is paid and bought to be covered up and downplayed, the other is blown up for the six' o'clock news to immediately paint that certain person and usually the persons ethnicity in a horrible light without looking at all the factors. In a society that prides itself on equality which is of course laughable, this is not very equal. Despite popular belief our society is NOT a meritocracy, and the sooner you understand that, the sooner you may understand and put yourself in the shoes of the other. Okay- i just found these words from Chairman Omali Yeshitela and felt it was relevant: I'm not a hunter but i am told, that, uh, in places like in the arctic, where indiginous people sometimes might, might, hunt a wolf, they'll take a double edged blade, and they'll put blood on the blade, and they'll melt the ice and stick the handle in the ice, so that only the blade is protruding, and that a wolf will smell the blood and wants to eat, and it will come and lick the blade trying to eat, and what happens is when the wolf licks the blade, of course, he cuts his tongue, and he bleeds, and he thinks he's really having a good thing, and he drinks and he licks and he licks, and of course he is drinking his own blood and he kills himself, thats what the Imperialists did with us with crack cocaine, you have these young brothers out there who think they are getting something they gonna make a living with, they is getting something they can buy a car, like the white people have cars, why can't i have a car? they getting something they can get a piece of gold, white people have gold, why can't i have gold? they getting something to get a house, white people have a house, why can't i have a house? and they actually think that theres something thats bringing resources to them, but they're killing themsleves just like the wolf was licking the blade, and they're slowly dying without knowing it. thats whats happening to the community, you with me on that? thats exactly, precisely what happens to the community, and instead of blaming the hunter who put the damn handle and blade in the ice for the wolf, that what happens is the wolf gets the blame, gets the blame for trying to live, thats what happens in our community, you don't blame the person, the victim, you blame the oppressor, Imperialism, white power is the enemy, was the enemy when it first came to Africa, and snatched up the first African brothers here against our will, isss the enemy today, and thats the thing that we have to understand.
  13. "Elf was brilliant on all accounts." Gatta disagree with you there friend, the first half of the movie maybe but the second, wow, that was horrible. I really thought wedding crashers was funny, i just saw it tonight with my bud, " mom, meatloaf, FUCK!" its funny! i dunno maybe i just like that played out character that Will Ferell always plays, it makes me laugh whether its the same thing over and over again, doesnt really bother me much i guess.
  14. Great flick
  15. yah i know some kids who did that.. and.. well.. it wasnt very pretty..
  16. well thats just it, people are also societal constructions, yes we have control over our actions, but you have to look at all the factors in peoples lives.
  17. lol yah he must be an existentialist, there is no possible way that what society has offered these individuals has any correlation to what they have become. Hell, people should live in poverty and damn well love it. Work hard everyday to get nowhere and still kiss the ass of the cop arresting you on countless occasions for driving while black. The U.S. should be able to dance around the globe like an elephant in a glass shop and we should all help to wipe its ass. I'm a bit bitter this morning lol. - hehe, i guess all us "damn liberals" must be getting on his nerves. -calm2chaos: tell Ann Coulter I say whats up.
  18. Seemingly the U.S. can do no wrong, and always has the best of intentions ;) I admire somewhat you're loyalty and blind belief in you're country, I guess not all of us when looking at, oh i don
  19. I hope not! First time i did shrooms and last time, i was in my best friends basement, another good point is to have a good friend with you because you're more at ease, you don't want to be uneasy etc taking it. Basically the trip was justkinda odd, i stared at a wall for hours, and then walked home and everything was just kinda off, it wasnt anything like crazy nombs running around stealng underwear out of drawers etc etc. Ive heard though a bad side effect can be: enlargment of the tongue (allergies and whatnot).
  20. Just out of curiosity what do you dislike about him? In undergraduate papers he is the most sourced, modern scholar, so it seems a lot of people at least like his ideas.
  21. Oh okay, my bad, i just assumed since you quoted me etc.
  22. When a tragedy affects people in your own country, you are going to care more about it. It just hits home more & is more personal, which is a natural reaction. I'm going to be more concerned if 100 people die in an tornado in Canada than if the same # died of a tornado in Japan or the U.S., or example. For London'ers, they had their 2 minutes of silence for their fallen. We in Canada didn't have a moment of silence, nor did any other country that i know of. But i feel just as bad when i hear of people in London dying via terrorists as a i do those 80 people dying in Iraq, or all the people dying in Africa of hunger, or someone i see dead in the obituaries in my local newspaper. I feel about equally bad for all them, unless someone has an extrodinatry amount of suffering. We can't have a moment of silence for everyone who dies because we'd be standing around forever. But for London'ers, the terrorist attacks was a special tragedy...much different than a neighbour dying of cancer. How much people care about someone else dying i think just depends on how personally it affects them, how aware they are of the deaths (media etc.), and how tragic the circumstances. You do realize im not comparing US and international news, i understand it would not hit us better. I was comparing middle class american news with inner city (within the US) news. How one school shooting is bigger then another and why and etc etc. I wasnt comparing UK tragety's to UK ones.
  23. I really don't understand the Harry Potter craze. Maybe Im just not with it. I used to be with it, then they changed what it was, now what I am with, isnt it, and whats it, seems weird and scary to me. but seriously ive never read any of the books and never plan to, so i guess i'll never understand its "greatness"
