  1. Also watch Tru Calling. Yeah that one was a bit of a miss.
  2. Yeah the National rock my socks and ruin my boxers. Have you heard any of the EP's like Virginia or the Cherry Tree? There's an interesting, earlier version of Slow Show on Virginia that is pretty interesting. Lacks the punch of the chorus in the album version though.
  3. Definitely not as bad as I expected. And the video for Pork and Beans is amusing for about 5 minutes... but it's a pretty damn amusing 5 minutes.
  4. I don't know, I'm pretty skeptical. It used to be a brilliant show. It seems like where they used to intelligently make subtle or overt references to literature or history or philosophy or film, now it just feels like they're milking pop culture bullshit and wrangling new celeberity flavour-of-the-week guest stars for each episode. But then again, the "Rock" and "Hard Place" joke from the preview was worth a chuckle.
  5. Days of Being Wild. A foreign film about relationships in Hong Kong in 1960 by Wong Kar Wai. Absolutely stunning.
  6. Hey I'm the last person to defend a band like Ace of Base, but just how random it is that he covered that? That's awesome. I hate the original, and I hate the Base, but his cover is so cool.
  7. Plus, he covered "The Sign" by Ace of Frigging Base. How sweet is that?
  8. No truer words, friend, but I guess I just am always really forgiving when I know I like a director and actor. I mean the Batmobile I agree, shouldn't be militaristic, but I forgive it because that thing was effing badass. So cool. And Bale, yeah his voice was a little too dark, but from an interview I read he said that the cowl they had for him wasn't fitted properly, so any time he wore it he got intense intense migranes, so I think that's what made his voice be so pained and low and hoarse.
  9. My favourite songs are Going to Georgia (big surprise), and Against Pollution. But the whole Talahassee album is stunning.
  10. Firstly I actually love Christian Bale. If you really don't like him, try and find a copy of The Machinist. It's a flick he made a matter of months before Batman, and the script called for him to lose a lot of weight for the role of an insomniac depressive character. They asked him to get down to around 110 lbs or so, but by just not eating and chainsmoking for weeks he made it down to a grotesque 90 lbs. Like he's a serious effing actor, not just someone trying to be a celebrity. And of course, see him in The Prestige, another great Nolan flick. And yeah, Bale is on board for the next two films. Vin Diesel as Two Face, I frigging hope not, ha. I've heard rumours that friend of Chris Nolan, Guy Pierce (Pearce? sp??) was in talks for it. He was in Nolan's second movie, Memento. He'd be great for it. You'll also remember him from L.A Confidential. And yeah Batman Forever did establish Two Face, but see Nolan's movies are meant to be taken as a whole new series, and not tied in with the previous four, thank god. Don't get me wrong, the first two Tim Burton ones are awesome, but the second two were ungodly.
  11. In case anyone hasn't heard, the sequel to Batman Begins is shaping up to be pretty effing awesome. The first Batman flick to not have Batman in the title, it's going to be called The Dark Knight. It will be the introduction of the Joker in this new Batman universe, and will follow the original story in the comics (as well as the one-shot Joker origin story "The Killing Joke" from like the eighties) very closely. It will be really different from Nicholson's Joker, in that it was never meant to be as much about the creepy smile and the laugh, but about his intense, crazy eyes. He's going to be played by Heath Ledger. I know, possible groans, but I have faith that he will be awesome. And it's going to center on the Bat trying to take him down with the help of District Attorney Harvey Dent, pre-Two Face. They'll finally get him at the end of the flick, and the third film in the trilogy will be set about the trial, in which the Joker will splash acid on Dent's face, creating the dichotomous super-villain. Sounds pretty sweet. Hey, possibly take this with a grain of salt, but it's what I've found out in reading about the movie and reading interviews.
  12. It's really just one guy named John Darnielle. Really low-fi folk oriented acoustic stuff, but the lyrics are fantastic. He plays with geography and personal anecdotes that give the music a really intimate feel. Voice is amazing, and the breadth of available material is pretty varied. Anyone heard him before?
  13. Like (I'm sure) most of the rest of you, in anticipation of the new album I've been poring over every Matt related site or page I can get my hands on, trying to piece together little hints as to the new album's content or details. I've spent the most time on his flickr, where most keen eyes I'm sure have gleaned the prototype lyrics he wrote in the hospital, such as Prost-Elite and Single Spark Explosion. But, at the time I first saw it, the most interesting exhibit of all was the album cover sized blurry photoshopped picture of what looked like a blimp with a white 77 on a red splotch. The header for the picture said Dark Town Gospel. Now aside from the fact that I just think this would be a really sweet album name, the fact that he hasn't responded to comments left by readers for the picture leads me to believe it was a little tease. Sort of like he dropped the album cover and name, and then is all tight-lipped to make us sweat. Plus the fact that his old imprint label was called Dark Town. It might be that with this album he's feeling nostalgic, or because it has more of an independently produced feel than many of his past albums have, but I think this is likely the new title. Thoughts?
