Prisoners Voting
Ravenous itchy replied to Cherry Poppin' Daddy's topic in Politics and Debate: WRONG!
I'm gonna stick to the voting here. I see it sort of like this: if a person isn't responsible enough to obey the law, how are they responsible enough to vote? I don't know what your opinion is on children (legally, <18) being able to vote (and this isn't to compare criminals to children) but voting is a (rather large, in my opinion) responsibility that should not be taken lightly, thus it is kept from children until they are adults (theoretically, ready for it). I live in res at the university I go to, and I really get bothered when people I hang out with say stuff like "Im just gonna check off whoever" because I see democracy as a pretty important thing. I think I'm sort of off track here; I think what I am trying to get at is the punishment of being sent to prison (even the nice ones like you mentioned) is given because a person has shown that they can't be trusted to be a member of society. How then can they be trusted with deciding how our society should be run? -

I have no issue with crime prevention; I think that it is a very important issue that our governments give far too little attention. This is off the topic though, we are talking about rights of people who already have commited crimes. There needs to be a standard of right and wrong, and those who do wrong need to be told so. As Canadian society moves more socially liberal, right and wrong begin to get muddled up. I won't go into my opinions in other areas, but this relates to the subject at hand in that what you seem to be essentially saying is that people don't choose to commit crimes, therefore crimes aren't wrong therefore there shouldn't be punishment (forgive the generalization). The reality is that people choose to commit crimes. They choose to do something that they know is wrong according to our laws. Just as a sane parent will tell their child "no" if they do something wrong, so must society tell its members "no" when they deviate from our laws. -
Put on a different plug? I like in-ear headphones but they are too costly for my budget. For the people on the first page who misunderstood "earbuds": in-ear headphones seal your ear canal like an earplug almost completely blocking outside sound and giving the headphones the ablility to have much better bass. Besides the better sound, you can enjoy your music at a lower volume than you would otherwise need thus protecting your ear a bit.

This thread is surprisingly socially conservative for around here. Borntohula: the idea of prison is to rehabilitate people, yes, but it is also a punishment for their crimes, and a deterrent to those who might commit crimes. You have to consider all the functions of imprisonment, not just take the narrow view of rehabilitation. These people have broken the law, and by doing so they have forfeited their rights. -

blond If you were offered your dream job, but you had to move to a 3rd world country where you didn't speak the language, would you?

Anyone who didn't catch the sarcasm is blind. moving on... Out of 14 seats in SK, 13 are Conservative, and 1 is Liberal. There used to be a few NDP but people quit voting for them because the Tories are the only ones with a chance of getting rid of the Liberals.

Ralph Goodale is the incumbent (sp?) in this riding

The only election signs that I've seen in my res are tory ones. Nobody is falling for Liberal BS this time around heh

What Are You Reading?
Ravenous itchy replied to Disestabulistic's topic in Rentals, Television, and Readables
Currently I am reading The Lord of the Rings (for the fifth or so time because I <3 Tolkien); I started it in order to have something to do over Christmas. On the nonfiction side, I am reading The Purpose Driven Life, which I recieved for Christmas. Both are great books. Just some quick comments on previous mentions: I read the Earthsea series during finals and it was a LOT of fun to read, I would definately recommend to fantasy fans. Catch 22 is definately one of my favorite books. I haven't read it for a couple years now, but I would for sure say it is worth reading for those who haven't. -

Has Anyone Seen Chronicles Of Narnia Yet?
Ravenous itchy replied to Prometheon's topic in The Silver Screen
It was geared towards preteens I think. I enjoyed it, but I felt it seemed to drag a lot up until the climax. -
Sky High. It was funny, but not very interesting.

Runtime: 157 min (source) I really wish it could have been 3 hours plus. That would have been enough time to perhaps include Bagman and the winnings, or Sirius maybe.

I was always for expensive ones, but I recently lost a pair after having them for only a year. I am now having a much harder time deciding whether to spend another couple hundred bucks. Do you open presents on Christmas eve, or Christmas day?
-
No, I was correcting the painful spelling.
-
I want to get my apartment decorated for Christmas. I doubt my roommates would be into it though. My last dream was really crazy and not really about anything. Do you often remember dreams?

I would like to note that this is likely the most ignorant comment he has ever made...

Another reason to NOT MARRY YOUR COUSINS.
