So I'm re-listening to Trees Outside the Academy, and it's not as free form as Sonic Youth stuff or Psychic Hearts. If you like more traditional songs, go for Trees. If you like riffing and experimental stuff go for Psychic Hearts. And yay for listening to Joni Mitchell! Good to hear.
