nobody uses anything but a computer to listen to music, anyway. however, if you cared enough about sound quality, you'd buy a standalone dedicated cd player.
they're inherently the same, it's just a matter of which one is backed by more/bigger companies. i think blu-ray will win. but considering that a blu-ray player costs upwards of $1000 and an hd-dvd drive can be had for $199, i'd say you can't lose by trying hd-dvd first.
if you have a video card with video in then you can hook up the vcr to it and record to your hard drive. if, however, you do not, then you'd have to take it to a place that does it for you (for a nominal fee, of course)
