I could Stephen Hawking, but I'm not in the mood. I'm too busy rearranging my BSG Shelf

See for yourself, you can't get anymore geeky than this

I still don't really grasp how velocity is related to time dilation.

Me neither. It just is. That fucker Einstein managed to prove it.

Like it makes sense that as you go beyond light speed it LOOKS as if you're going through time to an outside observer. But I do not get how you actually DO.

Damn geniuses.

You can't travel faster than light. That's because mass increases as velocity increases, and mass approaches infinity as velocity approaches c, so it would take an infinite amount of energy to propel an object at or beyond light speed.

Also, how would an outside observer view someone as travelling through time? Man that's some fucked up shit.

can i come over and play with your toys charles... (not in the sexual way, just for the record)

Don't make me haul out the time travel theory. I've seen brains physically twist up like a rubber band airplane.

Bitch, please, I've watched information videos on the 10th dimension at 3 in the morning and turned out just fine.

I'm just basing that on people I have discussed it with. Causeality is easy, it's the quantum superposition stuff, and to a lesser extent the various branch theories you need to worry about.

NERD fight. ;) engage photon beam (flash-light) weeeooo vvrrrshmm waooh

I like these topics, I don't know much about physics. someone should make a physics question/answer thread

Oh don't be fooled. I have no formal training. Almost everything I know is based on heresay and the theories of people who may not have achieved any notoriety in their field. It is, nontheless, easy to confuse people with it.

I guarantee it would mostly consist of "HOLY FUCK I HATE PHYSICS AND PHYSICISTS AND THE PHYSICS-SCIENTIFIC COMPLEX" from anyone who has taken it, especially me. The whole way that phycists look at, approach and solve various problems is overly complicated and cerebral compared to the way chemists do it.

Posted

Indeed. It's something of a problem, because as much as I may enjoy the sciences and particularly physics, I hate math.

Posted

I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with math. I can do it, but far too often (i.e. right now) it devolves into doing math for the sake of doing math. You're given a problem with no known practical application, and you give a solution with no practical application. We don't even use numbers anymore. And if we do, they're not even real numbers. They're pi and e.

Posted

I always had this problem where I could not remember procedures and equations. I had no problem understanding the actual concepts, it was just that my brain refused to remember the 'how to do it' part.

Posted

I skipped to many steps and kept getting in shit for it...but I understood the concepts and could work it out on paper...never was that quick at doing math in my head

Oh yeah, I know that. Have you seen this?

Also, if you have a large chunk of time, this is amazing as well...

What Einstein actually said was that nothing can accelerate to the speed of light because its mass would become infinite. Einstein said nothing about entities already traveling at the speed of light or faster.</Prot, from K-PAX>

Well damn. I guess your fascination with crazy physics stuff equals my own. CHeck out the other link, it's quite good. It's a cool documentary all about string theory.

if you built a pump system from your junk to the toilet so you could stay at your computer and just go whenever whithout getting up to leave world of warcraft, you might be a nerd.

Hmm... well, I've never played WoW. But I did go to the washroom. I even got up. I was thinking about wheeling my chair to the bathroom, but I thought that would be too noisy
