Problem With My Router And Firmware

Okay, I use a linksys WRT54G v 6.0 wireless router. I'm trying to update the firmware (because I'm having problems with some things and was recommended to do so)

I've found the firmware download on the linksys website but I can't figure out how to open and install it. I know nothing about computers and am on the verge of ripping out my hair (ya know, if I had any)

help?

Also there is a better, more advanced firmware upgrade for it (obviously use at own risk) from dd-wrt, it's based on a Cisco firmware. I run an earlier version of it...need to upgrade sometime as well

The instructions for it are on the linksys site...shouldn't take you more than a few mins.
