Who's the best live band?
troy replied to Kumquat's topic in Music In General: David Bowie Appreciation Station
Jimmy Page and Pete Townsend didn't have to set themselves on fire to get a reaction and be known as two of the best ever in the business. But Kiss did. Notice the difference? A true talent can blow you away without the spectacle of fire, blood, vomit, or what ever their gimmic happens to be. There's a pretty big line between being a great band of musicians and great band of entertainers. Not knocking either here, but there is a big difference when relating musicians to entertainers. Both are great and serve a purpose, but I'll take the guy that stands there and plays his instrument to the guy that pukes on it. -Troy- -
Why is alcohol needed to have a good time? Shouldn't the music be enough to tide you over for the hour and a half that you would be at a show? Whether you can drink resposibly or not is besides the point. It only takes one drunken idiot to throw a punch or kick someone in the teeth while they are having a grand old time crowd surfing. And why should concerts be limited or restricted to those only in the 18 or 19+ age range? I would much rather prefer to be around a group of people who are there because they are fans and really want to see that band or artist. Sorry for the rant. I'm not anti alcohol what so ever, but when you mix large groups of people with booze, it just leads to idiocy and stupidity. Leave the bottles at home and enjoy the show...sober. You and everyone around will have a much better time, and you might get to leave with all of your teeth. Cheers. -Troy-

Save your dollars and buy the real deal. After some time playing the knock offs, you'll want to up grade anyways. No sense in wasting your money on cheap gear. -Troy-

The first time I heard MGB was about seven years ago I think. I was playing in the shittiest band ever at the time and I remember one day, our drummer came in with a cd and said "guys, you gotta hear this song! We have to cover this!" I was floored and hooked immediately. The song: Everything is Automatic. I don't think we ever got around to covering it though. Good thing. We would have butchered it. Been a fan ever since though. Cheers. -Troy- Jennzebel- Your post made cry. Seriously.

What happens when celebrities such as Matt, Bono, etc... do the things they do, whether it be meeting with leaders on a global scale, or posting a news article on their website, is getting people informed on what's happening in the world. By using their celebrity status, you as a fan gets inadvertantly informed on the issue because you want to see what that celebrity is up to. I think anyone who does anything to try and help another in need, no matter what the scale or motivation behind it, should still be commended for their actions. As for Bono Looking "bored" during some of his press conferences, I don't know, maybe he is bored. Maybe he's fed up because it seems like his efforts are all for not, or maybe it's something simple like he's tired from travelling all the time. Nobody knows but him really. Anyways, just wanted to say my bit, and please don't slag someone for trying to help. Whether you like that person or not is besides the point. These people are doing good. Leave it at that. -Troy-

i'm a massive fan of acoustic music in general and seeing a band or artist in that setting in my opinion is what it's all about. i just love it. seeing matt in that environment would be a definite highlight for sure. i had the pleasure of seeing bruce cockburn last year at the play house in fredericton. just him, a couple of acoustics and a female doing back ups and playing some piano. just a beautiful night of music. my eyes and ears never wandered for 2 1/2 hours. a true delight. even as a "rock" musician, i'm pretty sick of trying to catch a band amidst the drunken idiocy that generally takes place. it's pretty hard to enjoy a show when you're being kicked in the head, pushed around and having beer spilt on you. i like that best! maybe i'm getting old at the age of 27. i much prefer the low key atmosphere's now. much more enjoyable when you cantake it all in and not have to worry about what's happening in the play ground with the kiddies surrounding you. anyways, thumbs up for a matt good acoustic tour. cheers. -Troy- oh, to jamesg from vernon. i'd be happy to play your art centre. let me know and i'll be there. lol.

you can make a high quality record fairly cheap these days. i think there's still a lot of factors involved in making a "good" record, like talent, but with todays tools, big budget records having to be backed by a major label is almost a thing of the past. i did a record with a band last year for roughly $10,000 and the guys at radio said it was possibly the best record to ever come out of this area. not to toot horns or anything, just saying you can make a great record for decent prices. i'm not sure of the exact break down, but i think producer fee's/recording was in the $4500 range, and mastering/duplication was around $5000 ish. the band wasn't fronted cash from any companies either and is still footing the bill on their own. and over time, all money will be re-couped from touring/cd sales, which in my experience doesn't take long. if you record on that type of budget, sell 6-800 cd's you should be in the clear. so it just kind of shows that you can, as an indie artist, make a record that can compete with the big labels and not put yourself into a massive debt hole for 20 years. but then again, this all depends on if you have the balls to give everything up and go whole hogg, because in order to do the above, nothing else can matter except making a musicaly sound cd and touring the snot out of it. anyways, i could talk all day on this shit, but i need a coffee and that takes priority right now. cheers. -Troy-
