  1. it's called "where the buffalo roam." it's not so much a straight adaptation of anything, as an embellishment on hst's legend. bill murray is ALMOST as great as mr. depp as thompson. it's worth a viewing.
  2. now that ive heard something good about them, i'll check them out. up until now it's been impossible to conceive of listening to anything that has anything to do with nickelback. because im small minded.
  3. good song, that. i'd forgotten all about it until it happened to play on the subway while reading said book. freaked me out.
  4. for years, and as recently as 10 months or so ago in the toronto star, ive heard that johnny depp was deep into filming an adaptation of hunter thompson's "the rum diary." since then, though, i have heard nothing and he keeps putting out movies. there are pages around about it that haven't been updated. anyone in the know as to what ever happened to this idea?
  5. i just read south of no north by charles bukowski, and thought it rather fantastic. (an aside: there's a story in it that seems to have inspired the "devil on roller skates bit" in htb) this was my introduction to him. i figured id pick up one of his books seeing as how he's stylistically in line with a lot of my favourites. anyhow, any bukowski fans or haters? what do you suggest i pick up next from him? what should i maybe avoid?
  6. i actually became a fan of matt in my youth when, in terms of the media i was paying attention to at the time, he was on the level of international superstar. everything is automatic and then apparitions, i couldnt turn on the radio without hearing them. but they stood out, so i liked them. to be fair, though, ive become a lot more cynical since then. if matt became a superstar now it wouldnt change a thing. but there are probably some pretty fine bands ive glossed over because of too much airplay or too slick production since then. i suppose, for me, it depends on how im introduced to them, whether i keep a fully open mind or not.
  7. i was the bastard that voted for the great music. of course i hope that matt's okay. but the idea that art is therapy is a fine concept. and so far i've found the results of him dealing with all the things he's dealing with, at it's finest, profound, and at it's least inspired, genuinely entertaining. so of course i hope he gets through this all as well and as soon as he can. but if he happens to write yet another claustrophobic masterpiece while he's at it, i certainly won't complain. why do i suddenly feel like a callous consumer?
  8. i may just be stuck in my ways, but i find cubase to be fantastic. it's much better quality than garageband (i find), but still pretty easy to use. ive just tried protools for the first time. im impressed, but its not for the novice, which i am. ive been amazed what we've done with cubase and a crappy computer mic, with some fruity loops for drums. much better than most of the studios ive been in, if simply for the amount of time you can spend on recording without breaking the bank.
  9. the good times are killing me-modest mouse
  10. placebo are fantastic. my ladyfriend got me into them (moreso than i was) a few years ago. their first self-titled album is the most urgent, i suppose. so it and black market music are my favorites. i dont see them as power-chord alt-rock though. they're into some pretty bizarre tunings and atonal chords. like sonic youth (who they seem to reference a lot...), except in half the time.
  11. i couldnt really get into no cities left when i first got it. (of course, i wanted it because i thought they were fantastic opening for matt on the avalanche tour). i didnt dislike it, but over time ive started to appreciate it more, to the point where it hasnt left my cd player in about 3 weeks. i guess it jsut takes repeated listenings. i bought end of a hollywood bedtime story last night. ive listened to it once. it doesnt appeal to me greatly. but ive learned that i should give it time before i judge it. i got gang of losers when it came out. it's more instantly likeable, but i find it a little plodding in parts. so far, id have to say no cities left is tops. my judgement on the others is generally positive, but time will tell.
  12. that was also the show in toronto at the mod club. it sure did sound great for that 15 seconds he actually played though.
  13. allegedly there isn't. he mentioned at at least one of the acoustic shows that it's all good during the intro, but once that riff kicks in, it all goes to hell. so he apparently never did it acoustic. a shame, really, but one can see what he means.
  14. ive been watching this thread for a while, but have had nothing to contribute so far. but we'll be recording all weekend and i hope to have something of relevance to put up. im impressed so far, for sure.
  15. if i were to, which i would not, perhaps on the chest, an arrow pointing up, above the word "missing." of course, the arrow could point down, depending on preference.
  16. girl-the beatles. or maybe radiohead's paranoid android. the pumpkins' set the reay to jerry is a good one. or the needle and the damage done by neil young. ...or ben folds five's dont change your plans. ...oh, really? just one...?
  17. electo-shock blues-eels when i said i wanted to be your dog-jens lekman adore-smashing pumpkins
  18. this was tough. kurt's was the least hackneyed. layne's was just amazing though. maximum power with minimum effort. eddie and chris, well, i could care less. not that i dont like their bands. but to my ears, anyhow, theyre nothing particularly special, vocally. anyway, my vote went to kurt.
  19. in the muchmoremusic bio, they show a clip of mgb playing a song live at much. it seems to be from the ghetto astronauts era. sample lyric "you are what you eat and not what you preach." what song is this? is it available online anywhere?
  20. waited for hours when i was a teenager to meet matt, get him to sign my book, give him a copy of my band's cd (we were called deepsix), and blushed and choked on words while he was being kind enough to ATTEMPT engaging me in conversation. of course, calling my band deepsix might have been nerdy enough.
  21. let me preface by mentioning, i really do love them all. some fit my moods better than others. some just don't have the flow. etc. but i still listen to all of them pretty religiously. anyhow: beautiful midnight avalanche in a coma (rooms) audio of being last of the ghetto astronauts underdogs loser anthems raygun white light rock & roll review in a coma (greatest hits) lo-fi b-sides.
  22. come on, people. every song the man has ever written is a masterpiece. ...except song for the girl. ...and IAWCC. ...and radio bomb. ...and... oh well, nevermind. but watch what you say about Purple. you'll make the baby jesus cry.
  23. update: i got nothin'. thanks though.
  24. sorry if this has been done to death. but does anyone have a copy of the vocal advice matt's vocal coach posted on the matthewgood.net boards about 2 years ago? i know its a long shot, but it would help me out a lot if someone had it stored deep in the caverns of their hardrive somewhere. thanks a bunch. benwich.
