So in my professional opinion... that is, I have used and maintained windows machines, I currently use a mac, and at work I do programming on centos3/4 (which is RHLE for those keeping score), ubuntu, and solaris 8/10. I can tell you that: If you want to have to fiddle with everything to get it working just right, you want a linux box. If you want it to look pretty and just work, as well as give you the ability to fiddle it, you want a mac. If you want to game, say 'bahhh' and get windows. You can argue it all you want, but it basically boils down to what you need, and how much you want to work on it. Linux is lots of fun, but it still has some rough bits. There is still a requirement that you can work on the terminal effectively.

you know technically all internet ends up on fiber at some point... Realistically you need to just weigh all the facts. Look at the bandwidth of the line, spec'd upload download speeds, up/down limits. Unless that are offering you superior to your current carrier I wouldn't bother... Also, you are going to put it over cat5 when it gets to your house, so are you really gaining that much?

I have Firefox, I am willing to get Opera. Camino is also popular, so I can test on that. As a side note, OSX includes IE 5.6 the last mac revision, so I can test that also.

Sorry, you are trying to get to you're hotmail from mail? You can only do that if you have an upgraded hotmail account. Unfortunately I cannot give the information since I don't have an upgraded account. Needless to say you can look it up on the web sight by searching for "accessing hotmail though outlook" I don't know about video support for webcams in Mac MSN (I don't use it). You need an application to use USB camera's though. Try MacCam since it installs support for USB cameras, and my make them accessible in MSN (though as I said I don't even know if the feature is supported).

Right, you need to know if you have a POP or an IMAP account. If you have an webmail interface it probably an IMAP account. No, you don't need a .mac account to use iChat, but it uses AOL so you would ned an AOL account. Adium is an excellent IM client on mac or MSN, ICQ, ect.

To be clear, I wasn't sure on the number. Turns out that I got the 5 right, but the units wrong. With regards to the protocol standards, I'm not entirely incorrect. You can't get a cable over 5'... I don't think. Turns out that the timing of the USB protocol is so tight that cables over a certain length cause them to violate the timing... USB is a master-slave setup, and the slaves can't answer before the master times them out and resends.

I think your questions are impossible to answer since none of us have a heterogeneous sampling of universities. Rather than ask for opinions of 'good' universities, you should ask for objective statements about the universities. The same applies to cities. Also, don't trust 'Maclean's' magazine's university reviews.

Well they are basically javascript, css, and html. This back end is usually pretty simple java. There are a couple of special functions that you can define that tell the widget what to do on hide and on wake. That's really about it. If you don't have a mac though, it's going to be pretty tough to develop a decent widget (since you don't have a sandbox).
