the thing with Matthew Good in the states is this... NO ONE HERE KNOWS WHO THE FUCK HE IS.. I'd go as far as to say that it freaked me out to find mm biography shows and whatnot about mgb... out here he just doesn't exist to the general public... and i constantly try to get people into him here but most of my friends listen to much heavier music or emo or some shit... the only person I ever succesfully passed matt onto is my wife... but yeah... I've gone on far too long..

Yeah so far it does seem easier... I would just like to be able to express things to other musicians and put things together in my head more coherently... and at the same time learning more always encourages you to try new things... at least in my experience... ;)

anyone else ever read anything more from Douglas Adams than just Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy? the rest of the series is awesome... and so is the Dirk Gently series! I'm in the middle of the second book: The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul.. It's hilarious..

if it's just listening to music you enjoy there's no reason you can't do that in linux... my problem as far as music is the software for music production and dsp processing doesnt compare in features.. anyhow... there are plenty of media players for linux... my favorite is xmms it's a lot like winamp.. and as far as a customized interface goes linux is way more flexible than windows in that department.. I have mine setup so that when it goes into the login screen it has that windows mg pic of matt in the background and plays a snippet of hello timebomb... and that was done in ubuntu without using the terminal at all whereas in order to do something similar with windows (which is the startup page not the login) you have to use either really difficult scripts or software in order to do it... anyhow... and as far as support goes ive been using ubuntu's forum pages and it has been much more helpful than anytime i've had to call microsoft in the past... for one... their webpage has never put me on hold for 45 minutes...

as far as ease of use it all boils down to several factors... first you have about a dozen thousand different linux distro's and all of them are different... so trying just a few really doesnt show you how easy some of them can be... second most people who have trouble with linux have trouble with it simply because they're used to how windows is setup and if its not the same or remotely the same they think its difficult... ubuntu actually has a much easier gui for setting stuff up than windows... but it's so fucking easy that you think its hard at first... mainly cuz at first we all look for the usual windows shit... either way to each his own... all i know is i wish i would have started out on linux... if it werent for the lack of audio software (which is slowly being rectified) I would gladly switch to it cold turkey, right now... however.. i'm not a gamer... so i can see a gamer's problem right off the bat... but then again that isnt a problem with linux thats a problem with the companies who make games/software... it all boils down to money... linux is free... so what software company is going to get any kickbacks from supporting it? it just comes down to what lewis black said referring to water since it has become a commercial product "when water was free it was like 'take a sip' now it's like 'it costs so fucking chug, prick'"...

yeah the last time i tried to recompile a kernal was the last time... at least for awhile... i think i popped something important in my cerebral cortex that day.. heh... and yes if it werent for all of the promotion windows wouldnt have near the software and compatability it does and would shine through for what it truly is... a shiny, gleaming piece of shit...

This is good stuff... in a way a lot of this I already know as a self taught guitarist, however I do not know all of this coherently, if that makes sense.. but I do use a lot of weird open chords... for instance I tend to take an E chord and play it 2 frets up with the low e, the b, and the high e ringing which I believe to be an F#/E? is that right? anyhow I just don't know all of the technical what is what as far as how all of the notes relate together in official name and etc.. most of what I know after playing without instruction for the past 14 years I know by ear.. but I have recently decided to take it upon myself to fill in the blanks.. Thanks for putting this thread up I might tire you however with regular questions if it won't be too much trouble ;)

you should really try it out... it really removes alot of those obstacles that usually come with installs and such... plus it comes with firefox as the default browser out of the box...
