Here are the two clips I got from Iota last night. Unfortunately I didn't get the camera out quick enough to get all of Great Whales, but it was still worth it to capture the trance like state Matt goes into during the closing jam. "Great Whales of the Sea" (Closing instrumental section) "The Future is X-Rated" EDIT: Tried to embed, but no dice.

Nice I have all of "The Future is X-Rated" on tape along with the last bit of Great Whales. I'll post them a bit later. Overall, I though it was a fantastic show. Much better than the set I saw Matt play in Montreal right before WLRRR came out. The only song that missed the mark for me was Empty's Theme Park. I like the album version a lot but the live rendition just seems off on a lot of levels. They seem to be going for more of a laid back, borderline country vibe until the solos hit and it didn't mesh for me. My friend who had never heard the song before cited it as their least favorite as well. "True Love Will Find You In The End" wasn't on the setlist but Matt obliged our pretty intense "ONE MORE SONG!" chant. Everything else was great though. Matt was chatty (which apparently has been pretty rare this tour) and seemed in really good spirits. He rambled about the guitarists hot cousin and how he has her send facebook messages pretending to be into Matt to piss him off. Talked about the history of Arlington Cemetery (built on the site of Robert E. Lee's house), enlightened the audience to the wonders of Hendrix gin before asking if guys still use ___ (gin?) and lemon juice to try and get laid, reminisced about his last show at the venue ("Am I crazy or was their not a wall here last tight?"... he's crazy, "I played the first half of this song for you the last time I was here... so I'll just play the second for you now" joking in reference to Silent Army in the Trees) along with an extended "drinking interlude" in which the bass player and drummer both busted into a hokey bit of intermission jazz. His rant about "rock years" was pretty amusing as well, saying that they're essentially 142 in rock years, so they don't get groupies anymore. Then made some off color remark that he followed up with a self-mocking "BUT HE'S SO PC ON HIS WEBSITE!" haha. And in what might be a first for the US tour, the show sold out right around doors time. My friend and I were literally the last two allowed in -- just hearing that probably took a few years off my life as I had just barely caught the metro and decided to skip the ATM enroute. Iota is a pretty small venue, but I have to think that Matt actually made some bank off this show. If (big if) they make it back this way again, he should definitely consider playing Black Cat in DC. Seems like he could do good business there. Crowd was good considering the amount of alcohol being passed around. No annoying people screaming for Rico or anything of that nature. What did annoy me a bit were the amount of people just posted up front starring at Matt. Not everyone has to jump, clap, etc but it's just weird to see people at a show like this not move or sing along for an entire set. Matt hasn't done a full fledge tour of the states in nearly a decade... get into it. After all was said and done, I wound up getting a set list and having the band sign it. Unfortunately Matt stayed on the bus, with their assistant indicating that he wanted to come out by the tour manager said their were liability concerns due to how the bus was parked (ummm... what?). The rest of the guys hung out at the bar though and were extremely gracious and very cool to talk to. Great night -- Couldn't have asked for much more.

Don't get too excited. It was in response to people yelling out for 29382932 different songs during a break between tunes. He laughed and made his "why don't I just bend over so you can stick a quarter up my ass" crack before a few people called out for Deep Six in unison. He then stated that when you write as many songs as he has, you start to forget most of them. In reference to Deep Six, "I don't even think I know what the fourth word is..." before fucking around on his acoustic until he figured out the chords for the intro. Played it and the crowd sang the "Deep Six, Come to bare... Good night and take care" portion before he started laughing and stopped. The guitarist mockingly clapped for him and Matt said "See how easy it is? Just fumble through a few shitty chords and people applaud. You hate me for that don't you?" gesturing toward the guitarist again. Quite funny to be sure, but hardly a tease of things to come.

Oh nice, I forgot about this. He's selling them for 15 bucks correct? I got the impression there are no Vinyls for sale, can anyone confirm? Also, for anyone who has been to the venue tonight (Iota) how early should I get there? I hear it's a rather small space and while I'm not too concerned about a sellout, I would like to get a decent spot.

Extremely excited for the show in Arlington, VA tomorrow. Still trying to rally some friends to "trek" across the Potomac with me for the gig (people seem to forgot that places exist outside of DC) but I'm sure it will be a fantastic evening regardless. Anyone else from The Bored coming out? I really hope the person who recorded the acoustic show Matt did at Iota a few years back tackles this one as well. That recording was fantastic and I'd love to be able to relive whatever Matt has in store for us tomorrow.
-
Cool. I'm new to DC, so I didn't make it to the show on the acoustic tour. My buddy who was stationed at Quantico at the time went though and loved it, so I'm hoping it will translate well to full band as well.
-
Full band? Holy crap yes. Definitely in for Arlington, VA and maybe the show in Philly or NYE in Charlotte if I feel up to it. I'm a bit sad he didn't opt for 9:30 Club in DC as I love the venue and it would have been easier to drag my friends along, but given how tight the budget apparently is for this tour it may have been too pricey. Regardless, I'm psyched. Not even Matt's pretty pessimistic "don't get too excited..." post earlier in this thread can't dull it. The mere possibility of finally getting to hear Giant live will keep me counting the days. One question though, are tickets to the Arlington show really only available the day of? That seems so strange to me... EDIT: Nevermind. Just checked Iota Cafe's website and that's standard practice for them.

Haha Coach: Oh, it's on! Randy: Nonono, it's not on. Coach: Whoo, it's on all right! Randy: It isn't on. Nothing's on. It's off. But in any case, thumbs up in front of chalk signs are no less lame than stealing a fist full of "Matthew Good live at the Magic Stick" flyers on your way into the show. Oh mementos.

Yup, you're right.. It was Tidal Wave, I had just finished reading that blog from Philly called "Breath of a Naion" before typing this. Guess I did a little mental switcharoo.

Awesome shots man. It should be noted that Matt didn't actually play Generation X-Wing, despite the set list... he added Pledge of Allegiance and Breath of a Nation instead. It was pretty funny being on the phone, listening to my friend get excited cause it was coming up (he could see the set list from where he was standing) and then hear the reaction when Matt changed his mind. I'm jealous that you guys got to sit down and converse with him. He was sick and bounced immediately after the Detroit gig I went to. Amazing pics though... Glad you got to have that experience.
-
According to Iota's website it technically started at 9 pm... so just a little bit ago. Which means they definitely lucked out and caught a bit of a pre-show.
-
Apparently Matt is already playing... my friend held up the phone and let me hear him jamming through "Born Losers"... sound check maybe or just an early treat? Either way, very cool.
-
Haha generally a good policy in life I'm sure. He's an Audio of Being addict like myself, so he may push for Tripoli at some point. Whatever the case, enjoy the concert. I saw the Detroit show and it was fantastic. It seems like the setlist has only gotten better since, so you guys are in for something special.

My buddy is a Marine out there, and he's going tonight. I think he's planning on getting there early like most of you are. Long time Matt Good fan and a personable guy. So if you see a dude with a crew cut lingering around the stage, say hey.. his name is John.
-
I love that song. One of my favorites. I know it's not really his nature, but Matt could make a killing if he ever did one show... one, where he played all of Audio of Being, start to finish and recorded it. Maybe throwing in some demos as an encore if he felt frisky. Release that as a CD/Itunes Exclusive on his site, and the base will eat it up. He'd make a huge portion of his fan base pretty much drop to their knees with thanks. Not only because he'll finally play songs that many have only dreamed of hearing, but we'll finally have an official Matt Good live CD. Plus he'd make a pretty good chunk of change in the process (tickets are a sure sell out at any price, and the CD will blow up among the dedicated fan base). Ahh to dream...

Man of Action (I'd go home happy if he stopped right there) Truffle Pigs Raygun Alabama Motel Room Born Losers I Miss New Wave We're So Heavy Carmelina Future is X-Rated Avalanche Prime Time Deliverance Weapon Failing the Rorschach Test Everything is Automatic Buffalo 7 Champions of Nothing Suburbia Encore: Giant Sort of a Protest Song Note: I didn't read the OP before I typed this up, but if I had to pick just an album, I'd go with Audio of Being since so many great songs from that have never made it into the rotation.

Thanks for pointing that out... I was just looking in the EP Demos section.

Detroit last night was pretty awesome. A guy next to we said that his friend who bartends at the venue indicated that they had around 280 pre-sold tickets going into the evening, which for their upstairs bar was incredibly high. I'd say there were around 400-500 people there once the show actually kicked off. A lot of Canadians from Windsor and such since it's right across the border, but a fair number of locals as well. The opening act was a local artist named Emily Rose, kind of reminded me of Jenny Lewis in terms of vocal style and lyrics. Fun performance that got the crowd warmed up. Matt came out to a thunderous applause and told a number of quality stories. One about the misconceptions bands have about SXSW, another about the crazy shit people left on answering machine they had for The Future is X-Rated 800 number, and some rambling bit about him, Pete Yorn and gay unicorns. The set list (as I remember it... I may have left something out, and the order is definitely off) I'm a window Suburbia Strange Days Alert Status Red Load Me Up Silent Army Through the Trees/Black Helicopter Born Losers 99 Percent of Us is Failure She's in it for the Money Avalanche (YES!) Apparitions Encore Champions of Nothing True Love will Find You in the End Again great show. As others have said, Silent Army Through the Trees is an awesome tune. Avalanche, Champions of Nothing, and Suburbia were particularly awesome. I just wish he had tossed in a couple more songs (Anything from Audio of Being would have been fantastic), but considering he's struggled to even keep a meal down, I'm more than happy with what we got.

I'd like to check out silent army in the trees. I just heard it live and it was awesome... if anyone could pass it along, I'd appreciate it. My e-mail is joeposh (at) gmail.com

Now that he's apparently back on schedule, I'm going to try and get to the Detroit show tomorrow with my brother. I'll try and give everyone here a run down afterward. Anyone else going?

;) Single of the week is definitely helping... let's hope it's not just a day one spike.
-
I'd like to add that Mymusic.com has the album for 11.99 for US customers. They were offering free shipping for orders of 25 bucks or more, but now it's 29.98. You can upgrade to expedited shipping for just a dollar. So if you have some other CD's you might wanna pick up (I got a couple of Canadian discs I'd been meaning to pick up for 9.99 a piece), it's a good deal for people who are willing to wait a week or so for the album.
-
While I love Metal Airplanes, that line has always stuck out to me as out of place and half assed. Kinda like "The only place to find freedom is in the dictionary... under F" on the last record.
-
When you guys said the radio edit was horrible, I figured you meant it was like in the states where they dub in ridiculous lyrics to overtake curse words, but christ... this is so much worse. They chopped up the entire song, and the transitions are pretty much non existent. I suppose if I had never heard it before, I'd think it was pretty good... but this hardly does the song justice.

Jesus, he's really not giving people much of a chance to catch this stuff huh? It seems f you don't refresh his page 24/7, you'll probably miss the previews. Oh well ;)
